Mermay 2021

Mermay! I absolutely love these gals; this is probably one of, if not my favorite drawing(s) I've done so far. Also the first work with my lil trademark on it, so there's that! I also tried incorporating some more niche facts! Some of which include:

--Seldom seen feeding tentacles repurposed into a halo

--Salmon go crazy to mate, thus her hat/hair evokes a male salmon doing a fertilization and whatnot

--Sea Squirts like her digest their own organs, including brain! So her head, while also filter-feeding, is literally empty (so the bubbles)

--Bobbit Worms are actually iridescent!

--Cookie Cutter Sharks can and have bite solid chunks out of military-grade nuclear submarines

--These animals are dried out and mutilated to make Jenny Hanivers, supposed "real" demons

--Betta fish mating waltzes r beautiful

--This one is actually 3 friends in one! The clownfish, the tongue-eating isopod, and an anemone (the hat/hair)!

--Pistol Shrimp's snaps create a little air bubble that reaches temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun (but only for an incredibly tiny fraction of a second)

--A Sea Monkey! She might be my favorite, honestly. She's based on the actual shrimp's anatomy, plus what sea monkeys were advertised to look like. She's a wildlife photographer, because sea MONKEY (duh) but also because the only real "tricks" you could teach them were to follow light. So she's a Flash Photographer! Also seen, another Sea Monkey, a Lionfish, and an Elephantfish

--A Transient Orca, which are known to beach themselves to find prey. Also they kill other whales

--Whale lice! While most species of whale have 1 unique species of lice, Sperm Whales actually have 3! 1 is a generalist, but the other 2 only live on Boys or Girls, respectively. Thus, the specific boy/girl wedding outfits. Lesbians :)

--Jellyfish life cycles are weird. They start as a Planula (in the picture frame), settle down and become anemone-like things that actually produce several clones of themselves! And the immortal jellyfish can just go back to this stage whenever! Pretty neat stuff.

--The Sturddlefish, an accidental hybrid created when scientists were breeding Sturgeon and Paddlefish in an attempt to make cheaper caviar. They didn't expect any of the eggs to be viable!

--The Sludge Worm. In a group of Boogie Worms, these guys wiggle around a bunch to breathe, so they look like they're boogying! Also, these worms specifically carry a disease that affects fish by making their skin go black, bending their spines, and making them swim erratically (so kind of like a forced flash-mob, right?)

--All cephalopods have donut-shaped brains!

--A whale fall

--Starring another echinoderm friend, a Sea Pig. Also, not-so-known fact, but all sand dollars are actually hairy when alive! Also, some sand dollars on Africa's Coasts are actively re-evolving bilateral symmetry! Crazy, yeah?

--An actual sea cucumber, btw

--Look up penis fencing. It's wild

--A yeti crab! I'm funny
