“Konqrul”

“Found it when I came in for the night shift, dead on the floor in a puddle of its own dried blood, bent in places that definitely should have been straight, patches of feathers and skin ripped open revealing the raw flesh underneath, tongue bloated and black lying against its own caked red on the pristine floor. Worst part of it all, though, was that it seemed to have knocked a couple of the Archaeopteryx fossils around, broke every single one. Which meant I needed to come up with a damn good excuse by tomorrow or the big man would have my ass. But when the sun came up in the morning, the bird let out this horrible, keening choke, wounds spraying out more blood than what should’ve been physically possible (ignoring its death less than an hour ago), twitching around and throwing itself into the walls and floor. Mostly, though, it just kept clawing at the fossils, as if trying desperately to reach something inside, until it finally fell over dead again. It was at this point we got the eggheads involved. They were real excited to study it, until they saw the thing’s death throes. Weren’t so keen on it, after that. I suggested we might as well just bury the thing, hopefully lay it to rest. Didn’t work. Showed up in the museum the morning after. The doctors were all gossiping with each other about weird ‘ferrets’ and ’seahorses’ and ‘snakes’ popping up all over the place. About how our guy was ‘the first of an extinct animal’ and other nonsense that didn’t solve a damn thing. So now it’s just there, every morning when I show up. I bought it a bowl of kibble and some milk, for when it gets hungry after all the theatrics associated with dying painfully every day. One thing’s been kinda bothering me, though. There’s like, a bajillion more extinct species than living ones, yeah? I sure hope that doesn’t mean we’re getting a bajillion more of these things. I’m too far from retirement to deal with that.”
